Social Diztance, "Half Evol"
Social Diztance is an underground rapper and musician based out of Brooklyn, New York. His latest single release, "Half Evol", initially dropped on streaming platforms early this summer on July 28th, 2024, before a recent debut of the Half Evol (Official Music Video), posted to the Social Diztance YouTube channel on November 9th.
"Half Evol" was produced by RaszyBeats @Godrazsy and the music video was directed and shot by MannyMax @mannymax26, with VFX edits being created by Drizx @driiizx.
Some crazy conceptual scenes and visual edits are portrayed throughout the official music video, with Social Diztance, Drizx, & MannyMax teaming up to tell a story of a drug-induced hallucination adventure.
Social Diztance’s journey throughout “Half Evol” takes him through a recording studio, before visiting an abandoned mental asylum and it’s windy rooftop, concluding back in the dimly lit studio with the artist laying out on the floor. This finale alludes that the entire chromatic asylum experience was not reality, but occurred only within his intoxicated mind as he was passed out in the studio.
Social Diztance begins the video inside a crazy studio set. “For the first part, We got an open studio garage-type vibe. We had like three in mind but this place was geeked so we picked it.”
Dripped out in a black & white checkered headscarf, “Hood by Air” long-sleeve, designer sunglasses, and ripped jeans, Social Diztance dances to “Half Evol”, exiting a car. A smokey haze pours out from the front seat and fills the dark room as he sips purple liquid from a clear plastic cup.
These dim shots are lit by colorful strips of LEDs across the walls and ceiling. Saturated beams reflect and gleam off the shiny vehicle, sitting in the center of the room, topped with a Hello Kitty plush.
This indoor car was a key component of the video production, with Diztance explaining, “I had a motorcycle I rented and a Tesla”. Being a perfectionist, he wasn’t happy with the appearance of these vehicles after seeing them on camera, opting instead to use his “manager’s cars, no cap. I ain’t really care on the car. Until I seen that Tesla, that sh*t looked yuck”.
A trippy vibe builds from the jump, with cool AI transitions that morph Social Diztance’s body to align with his position in the following clip. One example appears to show his face switching from the front to the back of his head, as his headscarf aligns between two early clips.
Another edit confirms this hallucinogenic feel, showcasing a “DrugsData” infographic entry for a pill sample, before slowly rippling into a psychedelic letter style, reminiscent of an AI-photo generation containing distorted letters.
Social Diztance explains that he, “Originally wanted a party type theme but the song ain’t fit… The second half of the video was at an abandon mental asylum that me and my people go too sometimes to smoke… We wanted a roof shot like on some Batman sh*t but we was at the the 30 floor and it was windy as a b*tch.”
Red and blue tinted VHS-style shots cut between the standard clips, showcasing more psychedlic and distorted shots of the artist and scenery, representing the rising waves and intensity of his trip.
Inside this abandoned building, graffiti-filled walls, decaying furniture, and rusted metal bars set the tone for the second portion of “Half Evol”. These clips further build upon the stylistic & trippy AI editing of the opening segments, now with the added element of eerie darkness in this new area, lit only by the director’s camera flash.
Social Diztance finds inspiration in the unknown, unwritten, and undefined aspect of a new track, saying, "instrumentals and beats inspire me. It’s like a blank canvas in which I can put my mind on, live on, or die on, both is fun to find what happens at the end of the song."
He explains his creation process for “Half Evol” by saying, “It was type instincts. All of my songs come to me, from internal feelings, good and bad. And how I be threw life… This one came to me as soon as the beat was being produced, As soon as my producer was done I jumped on the mic.”
Social Diztance did mention one tweak was made to the initial version, “I did rewrite the verse the original ain’t really vibe with the hook. so I rewrite when i got in that mode.”
In an exclusive interview with RSO Underground, Social Diztance speaks on his feelings toward the drill-heavy Brooklyn music scene, his original motivations for starting music, and shares the name of his upcoming track, "Zuko".
