CARGOSAM: SoundCloud's Hottest Cyber-Security Student Artist

CARGOSAM, “friday freestyle :D (prod. zikkid)"

CARGOSAM is an underground artist immersed in the vibrant music scene of Charlotte, NC. He is currently pursuing his passions for rapping while seeking an education in cyber security at 'UNC Charlotte'.

The rising musician has set the tone for his future works with his latest SoundCloud exclusive release, “friday freestyle :D”. This hard-hitting single from Cargo was released on October 18, 2024, with his verses performed overtop a crazy rage beat, produced by “zikkid”.

Born in 2005 & growing up during the “golden age” of the original SoundCloud underground, Cargo’s creative essences and aesthetic choices draw influences from the historic evolution of Playboi Carti, alongside the legacy of late emo-rap pioneer, Lil Peep.

CARGOSAM, also written online as CVRGOSVM, compares his early work to being almost “like a mix of both” Carti and Peep. While these iconic stars set a stylistic foundation for his discography, CargoSam’s modern inspirations and influences come from those active in the local North Carolina music scene.

As a current student attending the University of North Carolina - Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), Sam finds himself in a youthful, lively, and creative community that he describes as “sick, there are lots of cool artists, producers, and studios to record at.”

With only a few months of coursework left to go, Sam is enjoying his time on campus learning & embracing the lifestyle of a self-described “HUGE computer nerd”. He is set to graduate with a degree in cyber security in March of 2025, with a full certification set to be earned a few months later in May.

CargoSam's upcoming graduation at UNC Charlotte will complete his lifelong educational goal & set him up for the future of his dreams. “I built my own computer when I was 14 and I taught myself somewhat how to code in high school. I love music of course but I want to be in the cyber security field for my career.”

In an interview with RSO Underground, CargoSam explained, “My friends who make music inspire me to continue to learn more, go harder with music, and to never stop grinding.” This tight-knit scene in Charlotte is committed to blowing up together & putting their city on the map.

Many of Sam’s frequent collaborators and Charlotte community figures may be recognized from their past interviews with RSO Underground.

Including; Rad Luck, found on CARGOSAM’s “36 Freestyle”, alongside Clover Kiid, who included features from Sam on three of his recent projects; “Empire 3”, “Sooner Than Later”, & “IN CLO WE TRUST! (Empire 4)”.

RSO-affiliated artist & Charlotte creative “StarLyfe” frequently works with Sam, including a recent feature placement on his “Banned from Earth” single from September 23, 2024. The two both played roles in the creation of CargoSam’s oldest public track on SoundCloud, “IMVU CLUB MUSIC”.

CargoSam explains that the “original beat I used for (IMVU CLUB MUSIC) got used by one of my friends the same week, so me and StarLyfe aka Lucas worked all night that night on recording the version you hear now.”

This moment marked a turning point in the confidence and career of CARGOSAM, with the artist explaining that “it was also the first time I really didn’t put heavy fuzz effects on my voice and just heard it for what it was, So it was a cool moment in time for sure.”

In an exclusive interview with RSO Underground, CARGOSAM speaks on the creation and successes of his recent “friday freestyle :D” single, along with sharing a message to the world saying, “Be confident in yourself and don’t let ANYONE bring you down. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will and that’s a fact.”

RSO Underground Interview with Artist

Who are you?

I go by CARGOSAM. Sam is my name and Cargo is what I represent. Cargo is a lifestyle.

Where are you from? (How is the music scene there?)

I’m from Charlotte, NC and The music scene out here is sick, there are lots of cool artists, producers, and studios to record at.

Why did you get into the music/creative industry??

To find a way to express myself and let my thoughts become a reality instead of keeping it to myself.

Who and what inspires you?

My biggest inspirations sound wise are Lil Peep and Playboicarti, like a mix of both. But my friends who make music inspire me to continue to learn more, go harder with music, and to never stop grinding.

Do you have any stories of your artistic journey to share?

When I made the song “IMVU CLUB MUSIC” the original beat I used for it got used by one of my friends the same week so me and StarLyfe aka Lucas worked all night that night on recording the version you hear now, it was also the first time I really didn’t put heavy fuzz effects on my voice and just heard it for what it was, So it was a cool moment in time for sure.

What song/project are you currently promoting and what is the story behind it?

The song I’m promoting right now is “Friday freestyle” it’s a song I made over one of zikkid’s beats and it took me maybe an hour to record. But the end result was one of the coolest songs I think I’ve made to date and it’s on track to being my first solo 1000 plays.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I think it might come as a surprise that I’m a HUGE computer nerd. I’m currently studying Cyber Security at UNC Charlotte and I graduate in march plus get a certification that spring. I built my own computer when I was 14 and I taught myself somewhat how to code in high school. I love music of course but I want to be in the cyber security field for my career.

Where can we find your music and art?

I am on SoundCloud mainly. But I also have a Spotify and Apple Music page where songs go up as well. I also post a lot on my instagram @cvrgosvm

What is your message to the world?

Be confident in yourself and don’t let ANYONE bring you down. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will and that’s a fact.
